FAQs for Trainee Solicitors

Do you have a preferred GDL/LPC provider?

Yes. TLT works with the University of Law (ULaw), who provide the Legal Practice Course (LPC), Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and the Professional Skills Course (PSC) for our trainees.

We are confident that ULaw offers excellent teaching that will prepare you very well for life as a TLT trainee and, ultimately, a TLT solicitor. For example, ULaw has an innovative Legal Tech module as part of its PSC offering, ideal preparation for a role supporting TLT's objective to remain at the forefront of innovation in the legal sector.


What are the deadlines for Vacation Scheme and Training Contract applications?

For the Vacation Scheme, it's 10 January of each year. For Training Contracts, it's 31 July of each year.


What is your attitude to non-law students?

At TLT, it's not necessarily about what you've studied – it's your personal qualities that count. We're looking for your commercial awareness, drive and a real commitment to law.


What is your attitude to mature applicants?

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Mature applicants can bring experience in other areas of industry that can be a huge advantage as you build your career


Can I get feedback on my application?

We like to give feedback, however because of the volume of applications, we are only able to do so for those who attend a Vacation Scheme or assessment centre.


Can I still apply if I have a 2:2?

We’re looking for 300/24 UCAS points and a 2:1 or First; however, applications from exceptional candidates or those who can offer genuinely mitigating circumstances will also be considered.


Do you have compulsory LPC electives?

No, but we require our future trainees to choose electives that are relevant to our practice areas.


What is strength-based interviewing?

While competency-based interviews focus on what you can do, strengths-based interviews focus on what drives you in order to identify your potential. Typical questions include ‘What do you do well?’, ‘When do you feel you are most like “yourself”?’ and ‘When are you at your best?’


How much choice do trainees get in the allocation of seats?

We've around 26 seats that you could work in, and we'll always ask you for your preferences before rotation. There are no compulsory seats but the business’ needs have to be prioritised as well as your preferences.


Is there an active sports and social calendar?

We've got an active social calendar, which includes inter-firm sporting events and other social activities. These are open to all TLT employees so trainees get to meet people across the firm. There is something for everyone including annual summer parties, local social events and charity dos.


Do you offer sponsorship?

We’ll cover your CPE/GDL and LPC fees if you have not already undertaken them, and we'll give you a maintenance grant.
