Head of Banking and Financial Services Litigation team
Main Purpose of the Job
To be a solicitor in the Banking & Financial Services Litigation team, specialising in contentious work for banks and mortgage lenders. It is led by Jonathan Hoey who is recognized as a 'leader in his field' (one of only 15 in the country). In London, the team is led by Charles Spragge, who is assisted by Partner, Andy Lyon. BFSL is recommended by the Legal 500 for Investment Banking Litigation in London and is rated by Chambers in the top tier of Banking Litigation firms outside London. The team is currently 27 people strong, spread over Bristol and London. This position is based in London.
The ideal candidate will be tasked with handling defended and sensitive reputational cases, breach of contract/mandate, fraud, financial disputes, and professional negligence. There will also be more straightforward banking and mortgage litigation cases for the candidate to handle as part of the learning process.
Key Tasks and Duties
running a significant caseload for key FTSE banking and mortgage lender clients (our clients include Barclays, Lloyds TSB GMAC and HBOS)
advising competently upon a range of contentious lending issues with moderate supervision
assessing, and accurately progressing efficiently, matters of variety but that typically emanate from banks and mortgage lenders
assisting more senior solicitors upon larger cases and dealing with document management
actively involved in business development activities with clients and potential clients
actively involved in the production of legal updates every month for external distribution
some management opportunities available in the supervision of junior members of the team as progression develops
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A newly qualified solicitor with at least one seat in banking litigation or commercial litigation experience:
Ideally experienced in acting for banks and mortgage lenders in contentious matters (however the extensiveness of this experience , if low, may not be a complete barrier if the candidate has the right qualities)
Preferably with some experience of Professional Negligence claims.
Should ideally have a working knowledge of land registry practice and procedure due to the lending we deal with being mostly secured upon property
Keen to establish excellent relationships with clients
Keen and enthusiastic to learn and develop.
Willing to go that "extra mile"
Able to operate effectively within a team environment
