Professional Support Lawyer (PSL) - Employment

The Team
The work of the Employment Team is a core area for the Firm. The team is led by Stuart McBride and currently consists of 4 Partners, 3 Associates, 4 Assistants and a professional support lawyer. The team is ambitious, hardworking, supportive and convivial.

The team deals mainly with private sector employers ranging from plc/international companies to SMEs. Clients include Zurich Financial Services, The St Paul Insurance Co., Fortis Insurance, Alfred McAlpine plc and United Parcel Service Limited.

Employment & Regulatory Group Partner responsible for Know How and the Director of Knowledge

Main Purpose of the Job
Effective and timely technical legal support and analysis

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Based in Bristol with occasional travel to other office(s)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a PSL or employment specialist fee earner in a firm with developed knowledge management structures
  • Flexible on days but envisage not less than 3 days per week


  • Personal qualities:
  • Highly motivated
  • Able to contribute to a wide variety of tasks
  • Good self management skills including ability to drive projects forward
  • Able to hold confidence of fee earners on technical issues
  • Commercial awareness
  • Clear appreciation of the relationship of the PSL’s role to the profitability of the firm
  • Able to work with and take direction from key partners
  • Able to communicate easily with all levels of pqe
  • Good project management skills


  • Drafting:
  • Administer, monitor, update and maintain the group's precedent system
  • Draft and source precedents as required (including explanatory notes)


  • Training:
  • Plan develop and implement the employment training schedule to include know-how sessions and other training events as required
  • Identify areas of specific interest
  • Source the delivery of training sessions
  • Ensure training is strategic and in line with the group’s plan


  • Knowledge Management:
  • Monitor legal, commercial and industry developments
  • Implement a KM strategy that is consistent with that of the firm
  • Review and make recommendations in respect of updaters, journals and other resources available


  • Business Development
  • Writing client on-line updates and briefings
  • Preparing client seminars and workshops
  • Developing our client management training programme
  • Developing and maintaining knowledge-based client extranets
  • Writing for relevant employment law and HR journals and websites


  • Misc:
  • IT, assist with the identification and validation of legal support software and on line services
  • Liaise with other PSL’s and relevant associations
