Frequently Asked Questions

These question are not intended to be exhaustive, but provide brief answers to some of the questions on trainee applications and vacation placements. If you would like any further information please contact Fiona Allan

How much choice do trainees get in the allocation of seats?
We have approximately 21 business areas where seats can be allocated. We always ask your seat preference before each seat rotation.

What is your attitude to mature applicants?
We welcome applications from mature applicants. Experience in other areas of industry can be invaluable during your training and also in your career as a lawyer.

What is your attitude to non-law students?
We encourage applications from non-law students. We value the diversity which this ensures. It is more important that you can demonstrate the personal qualities we are looking for and a commitment to law.

Do trainees socialise outside work?
We encourage our trainees to socialise as a group and also with trainees from other law firms. We promote this through the funding of Trainee Solicitors Group occasions such as the annual ball and the organisation and participation in inter-firm sporting events such as cricket and netball. We also have an active social committee at TLT whose members consist of Trainees and employees. An event is organised each month and events range from bowling nights to weekends away.

Can I still apply if I have a 2:2?
Due to the large number of applications we recieve each year we only accept a 2:1 or First.

What is your policy on the recruitment of overseas students?
TLT is only in the position to offer employment if the firm can demonstrate that it could not find a suitable UK or EEA graduate to fill the vacancy. This complies with current employment legislation.

What are your tips for completing the application form
The application form is your way of selling yourself to TLT so make sure you have completed all sections of the form. Ensure that your application form is accurate and make sure all spelling is correct. Try to write an individual application form and let your personality come across. Don't just recreate the same application form for each firm you apply to regardless of the questions.
